Boothferry Primary School Remembers

The staff and pupils at Boothferry Primary School have spent this week remembering to coincide with Armistice Day.

Our assembly on Monday 9/11 reflected upon the work of the British Legion, the symbol of the Poppy and why it is important to remember. They were taken back to November 1918 to explain the importance of the Armistice for the country.

As part of our assembly, some children read the following poem by John McCrae as Doctor serving in the Canadian forces.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

On Wednesday, our usual assembly time moved to allow us to observe the National silence at 11.00am. All of the pupils including Nursery, all of the staff including kitchen and Admin staff, crammed into the hall for this important event.

Mr Sibley concentrated upon our local area, especially Goole. He explained that the reason that we can live in peace and choose to call Goole our home, is because of the sacrifice of previous generations. Many of us have moved to Goole from different countries and we owe these men our thanks.

A Year 4 girl explained that ‘We need to Remember so that it never happens again’.

The sacrifice was illustrated by a very poignant story about a War Veteran. We also heard some of the 679 names on the Goole cenotaph. Some of the surnames were the same meaning that some families paid a very heavy price for war.

At exactly 11am, Mr Sibley played the Last Post on his Cornet and we fell silent, allowing us time to reflect. Even our Nursery children managed to say silent until Mr Sibley played Reveille.
